Disaster Recovery Overview
Disaster Recovery (DR) setups continuously replicate Kafka data to one or more standby clusters so that traffic can be cut over with minimal downtime and data loss when a primary cluster becomes unavailable.
DR Types
Section titled “DR Types”The DR type is derived automatically from the link configuration you define in the topology step — it is not selected manually.

| Active-Passive | Unidirectional | Primary, Secondary | Data flows one way. Secondary receives replication and is promoted during failover. |
| Active-Active | Bidirectional | Peer, Peer | Both clusters serve traffic simultaneously. Data flows in both directions. |
| Hybrid | Mixed | Primary, Secondary, Peer | Combination of unidirectional and bidirectional links in the same topology. |
DR Setup Lifecycle
Section titled “DR Setup Lifecycle”| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Draft | Setup is being configured in the wizard. No replication is running. |
| Configured | Wizard is complete. Setup is ready to start. |
| Replicating | Replication is active across all links. |
| Paused | Replication has been manually paused. Resumable with no data loss. |
| Degraded | One or more links are in a degraded state. Replication may be impaired. |
| Failover-In-Progress | A failover operation is underway. |
| Failed-Over | Failover is complete. Secondary is now the active cluster. |
| Failback-In-Progress | A failback operation is underway. |
| Failed | The setup has encountered an unrecoverable error. |
| Decommissioned | All replication infrastructure has been torn down. The setup is read-only. |
Per-Link Status
Section titled “Per-Link Status”Each link within a setup has its own workflow phase, independent of the overall setup status.

| Dormant | Link is defined but replication has not started. |
| Replicating | Link is actively replicating data. |
| Paused | Link replication has been paused by the operator. |
| Degraded | Link is experiencing health issues. |
| Failing-Over | Failover is in progress for this link. |
| Failed-Over | Failover is complete for this link. |
| Failing-Back | Failback is in progress for this link. |
| Failed-Back | Failback is complete. Replication has resumed to the original primary. |
| Failed | Link has encountered an unrecoverable error. |
| Decommissioned | Link has been decommissioned. |
Replication Tool
Section titled “Replication Tool”Cluster Linking is the supported replication tool for DR setups. MirrorMaker 2 and Replicator will be supported in a future release.
Accessing DR Setups
Section titled “Accessing DR Setups”DR setups are listed on the Dashboard under the DR tab. Click any setup to open its detail view, or click + New DR Setup to start the creation wizard.
