Migration Planning Overview

Migration Planning provides a guided workflow to assess source and target environments, understand networking and infrastructure requirements, identify connected applications, review migration tooling options, and generate actionable guidance before creating a job. By completing a migration plan first, teams gain clarity on what is involved and reduce the risk of unexpected issues during execution.

A Migration Plan walks you through a structured assessment that addresses every dimension of a Kafka migration:

  • Source and target evaluation: Specify cluster types, cloud providers, and authentication mechanisms for both ends of the migration.
  • Migration scope: Select which assets to migrate: topics, schemas, consumer groups, and ACLs.
  • Networking and connectivity: Review network types, required ports, firewall rules, and cross-cloud considerations.
  • Schema and application dependencies: Identify applications, consumer groups, producers, and connectors that interact with the source cluster.
  • Tool selection: Receive a recommended migration tool based on your environment and scope, along with alternatives and trade-offs.
  • Infrastructure and cutover guidance: Generate deployment configurations, cutover strategies, and rollback procedures tailored to your plan.
  • Downloadable outputs: Export plan data, cost reports, application inventories, gateway assets, and Terraform packages.
  • Job creation: Create a migration job directly from the completed plan, with plan inputs pre-applied.

Migration Plans are available from the Dashboard under a dedicated Migration Plans tab. From this tab you can create new plans, open existing plans for review, and manage draft plans.

Structured Assessment

Follow a guided workflow that ensures no critical consideration is overlooked before execution begins.

Network Visibility

Surface connectivity requirements, port configurations, and cross-cloud cost implications early in the process.

Guided Tool Selection

Receive a recommended migration tool based on your specific source, target, and scope, along with rationale and alternatives.

Dependency Awareness

Discover applications, consumer groups, producers, and connectors tied to the source cluster before migration starts.

Downloadable Artifacts

Export plan data, cost reports, gateway configurations, infrastructure assets, and Terraform packages for offline review and handoff.

Improved Readiness

Enter job creation with confidence, knowing that networking, tooling, and cutover strategies have been evaluated upfront.

Draft plans can be reopened and edited at any time. If a plan is no longer needed, it can be deleted from the Migration Plans tab, provided the user has the required permissions.
